Moon Myth of the North
DIMENSIONS: 32” H X 39.5” W
DESCRIPTION: Long ago when people believed the earth was flat, stories developed to explain the movement of the sun and moon across the sky. In Norse mythology, the sun goddess Sol carried the sun across the sky in a chariot and the moon god Mani did the same for the moon, chased by wolves of darkness. Considering that Scandinavia has many hours of darkness in the colder months, one can better understand how this myth developed. I was drawn to investigating this lore because of my own Scandinavian heritage.
