All Ears

All Ears

DIMENSIONS:  48"W X 72"H

DESCRIPTION:  When weather permits, I love walking along country roads near my home.  Mostly I see wide open sky, cornfields and telephone poles.  For years I thought phone poles were identical, until I came upon one that had a small birdhouse attached.  Some wise farmer must have placed it there to accommodate birds with a taste for crop insects.  I also noticed metal identification plates and a mower gouge.

As I walk, the countryside peace is interrupted only by the sounds of gossiping birds, wind rattling the coarse cornstalks and the occasional whir of farm machinery.  I have titled this quilt “All Ears” because of the ears of corn, the ears listening over the telephone wires, and the birds listening to each other’s conversations.  Even the sky has the ears of family and friends quilted into it.
