On the Third Day
DIMENSIONS: 21”W X 20”H
DESCRIPTION: Often my artistic ideas are inspired by experiences and events of those around me, but this work came about in a different way. One day I was looking through a stash of fabrics that I had air-brushed and was struck by how one piece resembled rocky hills. As I rotated the cloth a cave seemed to emerge, reminding me of the terrain surrounding Jerusalem. Instantly I thought of Christ’s tomb and the miracle of His resurrection! What would the first visitors have seen when they arrived there in the early morning? It was a reminder of the hope for eternal life/perpetuity found in most religions. The resulting scene also reminds me of late-medieval paintings that used stylized landscape forms and symbolic nimbuses.
