Western Expanse

DIMENSIONS:  39"W X 29"H

DESCRIPTION:  Traveling through rangeland in the western United States allowed me a chance to experience the openness of vast areas not found in my native Midwest.   I sensed the freedom inherent in open spaces—an abundance of fresh air, natural vistas, and a feeling of being part of something larger than oneself.  At the same time, I felt loneliness and isolation.  Questions of how to cope in emergencies filled my head.   I wondered about the lives of early settlers, who had no electronic communication devices to bring the world closer.  In this group of pieces I tried to capture the land’s rich beauty contrasted with its emptiness.   2012
